Open Source Guru

Description

Open Source Guru helps developers find their next open-source contribution. After signing in with GitHub, users follow up to 50 repositories and the labels they care about (such as “good first issue” or “help wanted”), then receive instant, hourly or daily email alerts. It also tracks contributions with streaks and goals, offers a public profile with a README badge, and exposes a REST API for managing subscriptions.

My role

Solo project: I designed, built and deployed everything, from the database schema to the production server.

My contributions

• Designed the PostgreSQL database schema and built the REST API with Fastify
• Built the background worker (pg-boss) that checks followed repositories and sends instant, hourly or daily email alerts
• Implemented sign-in with GitHub through a GitHub App and Better Auth
• Created the app’s visual identity
• Built the Next.js front end
• Built the documentation site with Fumadocs, including the OpenAPI reference for the public API
• Wrote unit and integration tests with Vitest, running against a real PostgreSQL database through Testcontainers
• Set up a CI/CD pipeline with GitHub Actions: linting, Conventional Commits checks and tests, Docker images built and pushed to GitHub Container Registry, then deployment to a VPS over SSH that syncs the Docker Compose file, pulls the images and rebuilds the containers
• Configured the NGINX server, bought the domain name and set up its DNS
